New Phone
I while back, I started contemplating ditching my Siemens S55 and getting another handset. My S55 specimen has developed a really annoying display malfunction consisting of a vertical line of unresponsive pixels (several pixel wide). So, yesterday I went out and got myself a slightly used Sony Ericsson P800. So far, I am very impressed by the phone and its capabilities. It is a bit bulky to carry around and I have not been able to enable T9 text input (don't think the P800 supports T9), but that's ok. I really like the camera and I am looking forward to developing for PersonaJava (no link, since SUN killed everything PersonalJava).
———— News Update ————
I gave the S55 to my 9 year-old stepdaughter Sofie. Her primary phone requirement was to be able to play the "Snake" game. Initially, she was a bit disappointed with the S55, as it does not feature "Snake", but after installing MIDP versions of "Snake2" and "Super Mario", some animal sound bites and a tiger wallpaper, she has started to come around.
This was actually not the news update - the update is that Sofie accidentally dropped the phone, an event which has mysteriously improved the display malfunction (vertical line is now thinner). Sad to say, events such as this one very much undermine my parental strategy of teaching Sofie not to kick annoying technology around.
