Wireless Bridge is Down

This weekend, a freakish incident involving a massive power tool and repeatedly popped fuses somehow fried the power supply of my main router. My trustworthy wireless bridge is thus rendered completely useless and the rest of the house is without internet connectivity.

My good friend Richard at the Maersk Institute came to my rescue and directed me to elfa.se, where I found a multi-purpose, 5 - 24 VDC switching power supply. It should be on its way as I write this…

Meanwhile, I have turned off the wireless bridge, dug out an old NorthQ NQ91000 Broadband Router and hooked it up with the cable modem to - at least partially - restore internet connectivity.

BTW, this post is a first for me in the sense that I am writing and posting it using the BlogDesk blog client. So far, it's been a pretty good experience, except for DirectUpload of images not working. I'm using FTP instead, which appears to work.

This is not Sweden, but still…

Minutes ago, I received an email from my ISP in which they offered me a permanent reduction on my monthly service fee. I took them up on their offer, of course…immediately…that goes without saying.

In Sweden, the same ISP - Tele2 - offers an 8 MBit/s connection at SEK 289 (approx. DKK 234 or $40). So we are not in Sweden yet, but we are closing in on them…

Way to go, Tele2!

Overheard in New York

O'Reilly Radar has the story about overheardinnewyork.com, a site that enables people to submit snippets of conversations they have overheard in New York. The result is hilarious and if you don't watch out, it'll ruin your day:

He Was Still Struggling to Follow These Instructions When the Police Arrived

Guy: How do you get to Astor Place?
Old man: You go up 2 blocks, make a left, then go fuck yourself.

Hamas Has Won Here, Too

Man: Is this kosher?
Vendor guy: Um…there's kosher salt in the bacon.

A mashup - overplot - combines the snippets submitted to overheardinnewyork.com with Google Maps, so you're able to look up overheard conversations for a specific New York area.

Can't resist adding this one too:

Her People Love Fashion at a Bargain

Older woman: Excuse me, miss?
Younger woman: Yeah?
Older woman: Your veil, your burqa is very beautiful. I didn't know your people were allowed to wear it in bright colors.
Younger woman: It's not a burqa, it's a poncho. I'm Jewish. It's for the rain. I got it at TJ Maxx.
