emTube enables you to search and stream YouTube videos on your S60 device

"Dark Knight" trailer shown using emTube - gersbo.dk

I recently came across »Samir's« YTPlayer - a very early beta version of a flash application that makes it possible to search and view videos on YouTube.com on a mobile phone.

Since then I have found yet another, free YouTube »client«, namely »emTube«, an application capable of searching, playing and saving YouTube videoes on the mobile.

I am quite excited about »emTube« which I think provides a very nice, mobile interface to YouTube. I used »emTube« yesterday to search YouTube for clips from Led Zeppelin's recent concert at the O2 Arena in London - brilliant!

3 tips that help you make the most of your N95 when traveling

You might think the sophisticated features of a state-of-the-art smartphone like the N95 is mostly relevant to corporate road warriors roaming the planet in pursuit of important business deals.

Well, think again - even if you only go abroad once or twice a year (or less often for that matter), and basically just go lie on a beach somewhere warm - your smartphone can still be extremely helpful in making your trips both smooth and enjoyable.

Doom for Symbian mobiles - in my case the Nokia N95

Screenshot of Doom on the Nokia N95 - gersbo.dk

I have written about old skool gaming on the N95 before, but I am about to get as old skool as I possibly can: »Doom« for both Symbian S60, S80 and S90.

I think this post could only be more old skool if it was about »Doom«'s predecessor -  »Wolfenstein3D«, but unfortunately, there is no version of »Wolfenstein3D«* available for the N95. As far as I know…

So »Doom« it is!

Using a Dell Stowaway bluetooth keyboard with Nokia N95

Dell Stowaway Bluetooth tastatur - mobilmag.dk

If you own a N95 you will probably agree that this phone is something of a chameleon - one minute it is an excellent digital camera or a decent camcorder; the next minute an MP3-player, FM radio or powerful communication device.

Using peripherals with the N95 only adds to the chameleon-like character of the device - the TV-out feature is a case in point. In this respect, using a bluetooth keyboard is no exception since a keyboard opens up entirely new ways to use the N95, while at the same time turning well known features - e.g. the browser - into whole new experiences.

Comparison between image quality in new and old N95 firmware - indoors and artificial lighting

When I posted images yesterday, comparing the image quality between Nokia N95 firmware versions 12.0.013 and 20.0.015, a mobildebat.dk forum user suggested to take some comparison images indoors at night, in poor lightning.

Photographing under these conditions is apparently tricky and it would therefore be likely to expose any differences in quality.

I have not been able to get these images before now - I tried to last night, but had a little mishap when playing Quake on the phone (tip: do not slide to landscape mode while in-game). For a while I was actually sure I had somehow fried the camera hardware. I could start the camera app just fine, but there was no image - no actual input from the camera - just blackness. Today I was fortunately able to revive the camera by doing a hard reset (*#7370#) on the phone…phew!

Image quality is equal or better with new N95 v20.0.015 firmware

It looks as if I may have jumped the gun when I wrote yesterday that the new v20.0.015 firmware for the Nokia N95 produces lower quality camera images, when compared to the previous firmware revision (v12.0.013).

I have had the opportunity to snap some more images today and these actually suggest that the camera software in v20.0.015 firmware produces images of equal or better quality.

New N95 v20.0.015 firmware actually lowers image quality

===== 28-11-2007 UPDATE =====

I have had the opportunity to snap some additional comparison images today - images that contradict the claims put forward in this post. I have posted today's images in a new post.

I apologize for jumping the gun with regards to this issue.

Yesterday, Nokia released a new firmware revision for the N95 (»Classic«, I guess since there are now two other versions: the US and 8GB). The version of the new firmware is 20.0.015 which replaces the "old" 12.0.013 version from July.

The v20.0.015 introduces several very desirable features, such as Demand Paging which optimizes the RAM usage, leaving more available memory for running applications; faster camera software; and a general speed improvement that makes the N95 more responsive and snappy.

I am really happy about these improvements and thankful they have been added.

However, on at least one count, N95 users are worse off with the v20.0.015 firmware, namely when it comes to the quality of camera images.
