Initial Nokia N95 Impressions
I have now had my Nokia N95 for a little over a week and I have decided to post some initial impressions. Just like I did with my N80 IE. Please feel free to comment on your own impressions or experiences.
I am going to use the time-tested »praise-criticize-praise« formula that was forever imprinted upon my mind at the NCO training school in Sønderborg.
I think the N95 is a wonderful handset. It is not an exaggeration when I state that the N95 is probably the handset that I have been wanting for the last four to five years. Yes, the battery is a little on the slim side, but because the N95 provides me with so much utility, I can live with that. I regard all other complaints about the functionality of the N95 to be mere trifles.
It is therefore that much more of a crying bloody awful fucking !#$&% shame that Nokia somehow tripped with regards to assuring the build quality of the handset. What I am referring to is of course the problems with Nokia N95's wobbly slide mechanism. I know it is only a problem with some handsets, but all that matters to me is that my handset wobbles. I am reading reports about users being on the second or third replacement handset and it just such a blunder on Nokia's part.
What follows is a bulleted list of things I have noticed. Almost all are positive and this is not because I have suppressed the negative ones. Forgive me for making several comparisons to the Nokia N80, but it is an important frame of reference to me.
- Because of the wobbly slide mechanism, the front keypad is not nice to use.
- Menu navigation is really fast when compared to the N80.
- The getting started wizard just works!
- Like on the N80, WLAN works like a charm - range even appears to be better!
- I am totally blown away by the camera - captured images are good "out of the box" and images captured in low-light conditions are good too - I have seen reports to the contrary.
- Video - amazing in 640 x 480 pixels - whether it is ok to call it DVD-quality or not. TV-out via the included cable is brilliant.
- The stereo speakers sound great and are very loud - N95 is the loudest mobile phone I have come across.
- 2D mobile barcodes works really well. I never made it work on the N80, but the N95 reads barcodes super fast and reliably
- Bluetooth data transfer is insanely fast - at least compared to most other phones I have used lately. Not sure what it is Nokia does, but Bluetooth on the N80 was equally fast.
