Cooking with Robert Rodriguez

You probably know Robert Rodriquez as the director/editor/producer of quite violent movies like »Grindhouse«, »Sin City«, »Once Upon a Time in Mexico« etc.

Did you also know he likes to cook…and appears to be quite accomplished at doing so? I did not - that is, until yesterday when I came across a couple of YouTube clips in which Mr. Rodiquez shows how to prepare some very tasty looking dishes.

A couple of quite exotic ingredients are used for one of the recipies - if you know how to get these in Denmark, please help out by commenting…please.

Cooking videos after the jump…

The first clip shows you how to cook »Puerco Pibil« (aka »Cochinita Pibil«) - an extremely tasty looking dish that sort of reminds me of pulled pork (only spicier!). Maybe you will remember that »Sands« - Johnny Depp's character »Once Upon a Time in Mexico« - has a thing for »Puerco Pibil«?

To cook »Puerco Pibil« you need a few ingredients that are quite exotic to Denmark - here is a list with shopping links and translations:

  • Banana leaves you can buy online from shopasia.dk - in Odense, »Asien Marked« in Nørregade is likely to sell them too.
  • Annato seeds are called »Annatto-frø« in Danish and are sold as a dye (?) - maybe these are not the seeds used for cooking? Help, please!
  • Allspice berries are called »allehånde« or »jamica-peber« - never heard the last one before…
  • Whole cloves are called »nelliker« in Danish.

Ok, the second cooking video shows you how to cook mouth-watering »Sin City Breakfast Tacos« - I particularly enjoyed the step-by-step instructions to prepare flour tortillas. I have tried making these myself, but I have never really succeeded - hopefully Mr. Rodriquez' instructions will change that!
