New N95 firmware, smart2go is out of beta and other news
This post is a round-up of Nokia N95/Symbian news items from the last week or so.
First, through a series of fortunate events, I have been able to lay my hands on a second Nokia N95 handset. This handset is not suffering from the wobbly slider problem … at all!
The experience of using this new handset is like using an altogether different phone model. Nothing "feels-like-cheap- plastic" about this one…
Smart2go - Nokia's map and navigation application that comes pre-installed on the N95 - has been updated. With this new version 1.0, smart2go is officially out of beta.
Updates include:
- A user interface make-over, featuring new colors and icons
- Changed/improved search function
- Support for Assisted GPS which yields faster satellite lock-on and coverage indoors and in high-rise environments.
The new version of smart2go can be downloaded from smart2go.com for most handsets.
It is not possible to download smart2go v1.0 for the N95 since it appears to come bundled with the upcoming and revised N95 firmware. The current firmware revision is v11.0.026, but symbian-guru.com reports on revision v12.0.013 being in the pipeline. Besides the smart2go and Assisted GPS update, the new revision seems to comprise mostly minor bug corrections.
Keep an eye on Nokia Software Updater (NSU).
Lastly, Nokia have released their port of the Apache web server for Symbian OS - Nokia Mobile Web Server (MWS). MWS is an updated version (code name »Sombrero«) of Nokia's open source project »Racoon«.
Very briefly, MWS enables the user to publish content already on the phone (e.g. contacts, images, calendar, call logs etc.) plus blog and web pages. Furthermore, some phone functions can be remotely controlled via MWS, the camera for instance.
Having a web server on your phone, in you pocket is way beyond cool! It opens up a whole new world of possibilities for self-publication and because it is Apache (and there is a Python module), I guess people will pretty soon find all kinds of interesting things to do with MWS.
I will most definitely take a closer look at MWS in the near future…
