Notes from inaugural meeting of Mobile Monday Denmark

Mobile Monday Denmark gersbo.dkOn Monday I attended the inaugural meeting of the Danish Mobile Monday (MoMo) chapter.

The meeting took place at the IT University in Copenhagen and was characterized by presentations by big, well established firms - not much of an "underground", startup vibe there.

Perhaps this is to be expected for a first meeting and a very positive thing was the large turnout. More than 100 persons attended the meeting.

The meeting saw presentation from "3″, TDC, The Cloud, and "3rd Person" - developers of "Misslead", the new online women's game at "3″'s portal. Furthermore, the meeting - and the network - was introduced by Pouline Middleton, CEO of Crossroads Copenhagen, and Jari Tammisto, CEO of Mobile Monday.

What follows are my notes taken during the meeting:

Introduction

Jari Tammisto Mobile Monday Denmark gersbo.dkToday's meeting is mobile broadband, the next meeting on September 2nd will be about mobile TV. Jari Tammisto - one the 50 Finnish founders of Mobile Monday - described how different MoMo chapters are. In Helsinki they meet at night clubs over cigars (+ tango?) - in Paris firms use MoMo meetings to announce new products and services to the press.

"3″ on Turbo 3G

  • "3″ market share is 3.3%, but handles 63.3% of all data traffic.
  • Roll out of mobile broadband in Denmark: Nov 2006: 3.0 Mbit/sec, H2 2007: 7.2 Mbit/sec, 40 mbit/sec is within reach.
  • "Planet 3″ portal is visited by 70.000 daily, by handset.

TDC Hotspots

  • Morten Christiansen CEO 3 Turbo 3G Mobile Monday Denmark gersbo.dkThe strategy is to place hotspots in places where people "get stuck" while traveling, e.g. gas stations, diners etc.
  • Traditional "pay-as-you-go" billing is increasingly replaced by alternative price models, e.g. "free-for-guests" (hotels, restaurants etc.), sponsored, communities ("FON"), revenue shared.
  • Regards 3G og WiFi as supplementary to each other, each having unique strengths and price models.
  • TDC disregards broadband customers who violate contract terms by sharing their bandwidth on "FON", because customers would otherwise just switch broadband provider.
  • Does not regard communities such as "FON" as threats, since a company like TDC could just launch their own community, or choose to collaborate with "FON".Roald Sanden The Cloud WiFi Mobile Monday Denmark gersbo.dk
