My three current S60 favorites

I have three things that I really appreciate about the S60 OS on my N95 at the moment.

These are not earth shattering features, but it is just minor stuff - tweaks - that makes everyday usage easier and more enjoyable.

Some are customizations that are not part of the default configuration of the phone, so read on and let me know, if you have any other suggestions…

Remember, the following is not rocket science - just minor stuff that makes life a little easier…

FM Radio

My first favorite is the built-in FM radio - Visual Radio. I know, this is no tweak, but an application! It is just that after getting the N95, Visual Radio has made me rediscover radio plus boosted my ability to stay abreast of current (and other) events. I listen to the radio riding my bicycle to and from work and I love it - it is a killer app for mobile phones.

Auto-complete Message Recipient

The second favorite is the S60 feature that enables you to search for contacts when sending text messages. All you have to do in order to use this feature, is to switch text mode from the default number mode (123) to character mode (abc). This is done by pressing and holding '#'.

S603rd autocomplete message recipient gersbo.dkWhen composing a text message, auto-completion is used in the following way:

  1. In the recipient field, key in the first (few) character(s) in the contact's name.
  2. Write the message as usual.
  3. To send the message, press the green "Call" hard button. This brings up a list of contacts - see the screen shot to the right - containing the contacts that match the characters keyed in, in step 1.
  4. Select the recipient contact(s)  and press "OK".

That is really easy and if you are a bit clever when naming contacts, it becomes even easier…

Special Characters

S603rd Edit Key gersbo.dkMy last favorite is a shortcut to inserting special characters in messages. By pressing the "Edit"-key ("Pencil"-key on front keypad) a menu appears containing the most used special characters.

I prefer this way to going through the list of special characters assigned to the "1″-key, as well as pulling up the entire special character menu using the "*"-key.

If you would like to know more tweaks and shortcuts, here is a link to a list of S60 tips at Nokia Hong Kong (found via blogs.s60.com). This list is somewhat like the S60 tips and tricks pages - except the Hong Kong list is actually more exhaustive.
