Psssst! Secret test of Windows Live Messenger for Symbian S60
Sorry for not posting for a while.
I have been on vacation and done some serious work around the house. To make up for my absence I offer a bit of breaking news: A genuine Microsoft Windows Live Messenger client for Symbian S60, 3rd edition. Not some dubious Chinese stuff, but the real McCoy - straight from Redmond and courtesy of uncle Bill.
For some reason, Nokia and Microsoft have decided to keep it a secret that the Symbian Messenger client is being pilot tested among Swedish users (in Sweden the Messenger client should be available in the "Download!" section). The two companies should probably have realized that such news is bound to leak onto the net. Maybe they did - in these times of viral marketing you really cannot be sure. Microsoft have pulled off stunts like this one before.
Installing the client is completely straightforward - the installation files come packed in a .zip-archive (download link below). There are two files to install:
- Først installeres 'WindowsLive.SIS'.
- Dernæst installeres 'dep.sisx'.
Upon installation 'Messenger' can be found in the 'Programs' menu - look for the usual "icon-that-looks-like-a-ludo-piece".
When Messenger is launched the above screen is shown. Log on by choosing "Options" | "Log on" as shown in the left-most image below. After typing in user name and password, the program will ask whether to synchronize email. The synchronization is because Messenger integrates with the phone's other message accounts giving direct access to Hotmail accounts (more about this below).
As Messenger logs onto the network, contacts are synchronized (below left). The list of contacts is diveded in to online and offline contacts. The last image below illustrates what it looks like when a message is typed in. Very simple and straightforward.
Messenger integrates with the contacts and message accounts on the phone. In the "Messages" menu a Windows Live Hotmail item is added, see the image below left. The image on the right shows the welcome message which briefly explains how to synchronize the phone with a Hotmail account. Also, a list of Windows Live Contacts is added to "Contacts". This list reflects the online status of each contact.
I have not been able to perform any lengthy and thorough test of Messenger yet, but the initial impression is very positive. Messenger can be used with a 3G (or 2G/2.5G) or WLAN connection - if using 3G check how data transfer is priced on your plan, it can be expensive.
