Nokia Maps v1.2/1.02 - good and bad

Nokia Maps v1.2 splash screen - mobilmag.dk I own two Nokia N95 handsets and after reading about the release of the latest version of Nokia Maps (aka Smart2go), I decided to install the new version on one of the handsets. The other handset continues to run the »old« Maps version, v1.0/1.01 - the one that was included with the most recent firmware revision, v12.0.013. Between these to versions, a third version - v.1.1 - circulates on the net.

Ok, so whilst riding my bike to work this morning, I decided to conduct a minor comparative study of the two versions.

Using the Nokia N95 as a video game console

Total Air Mayhem 1942 on the Nokia N95 - gersbo.dk 200 years ago as a teenager, I would hang around in dodgy fast food places to play arcade video games. One of the games I played was »1942«, a game which I have recently (re)discovered for my mobile phone.

In fact, I have not just been playing it on my mobile phone - I have also been using the TV-out capability of the N95 to use the phone as a video game console with my TV.

Is that a trick question?

Jessica Simpson is manly - gersbo.dk I clicked on a Google Adsense ad today and ended up at the site of the picture search engine, UTYP - part of the digital playground of the Hong Kong-based digital design company Nthinking.

Apparently, UTYP relies on its users to train the search engine so beneath the search text field an image is displayed (like the example to the right) with different descriptions, prompting the user to provide the description that makes the most sense to him/her.

No problem so far - it's actually quite fun to give feed back on a few images.

Until this image came on the screen, that is.

S60 Browser shortcuts

S60 browser screenshot of mobilmag.dk - gersbo.dk I have been using the Web Browser for S60 on my N95 quite a bit during the last few days.

For no particular reason - except my own convenience - I post the keypad shortcuts that can be used with it:

"1″-key: Open bookmarks.

"2″-key: Open search field - search as you type.

"3″-key: Back-button.

"5″-key: Select window (if more than one window is open) - use left-right to switch between windows.

"8″-key: Open page overview.

"9″-key: Enter new web address.

"*"-key: Zoom in on page.

"0″-key: Go to start page.

"#"-key: Zoom out on page.

These shortcuts are hard-coded into the application and cannot be changed. Keys "4″, "6″ and "7″ do not appear to do anything.

iPhone baby internet?

AppMarks.com on N95 - gersbo.dk When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone in his Macworld 2007 keynote address, one of the main selling points was the iPhone's ability to provide the »full« internet experience.

Apple marketing in general and Jobs in particular have since tried to really hammer home this point, ridiculing "smartphones" for providing only a »baby-internet« experience.

Fine by me - but it makes me wonder what we are then supposed to make of all the "iPhone-only" websites that currently seem to mushroom.

That is not the »full« internet either, is it?

Nokia Q2 2007: More sales and increased profits

Nokia Handset SalesYesterday, Nokia published their results for this year's second quarter.

The published results suggest to me that Nokia continues the growth that has characterized the past few years - Nokia is selling more phones and making more money.

In fact, there only seems to be one area in which Nokia is doing not quite so good.
