Nokia Q2 2007: More sales and increased profits
Yesterday, Nokia published their results for this year's second quarter.
The published results suggest to me that Nokia continues the growth that has characterized the past few years - Nokia is selling more phones and making more money.
In fact, there only seems to be one area in which Nokia is doing not quite so good.
Here follows a few, selected highlights from Nokia's quarterly figures:
- Nokia sold 100.8 million handsets in Q2, 2007. That is 29 % more handsets than Q2, 2006 (YoY) and 11 % more than the previous quarter (QoQ).
- Compared to Q1 2007, Nokia estimates to have raised their market share by 2 percent - from 36 % to 38 %.
- In the second quarter, Nokia sold 9 million N-series handsets, including 1.5 million N95 units.
- In the second quarter, Nokia sold 2 million E-series handsets, including 1 million E65 units.
The only market with decreasing sales is North America, i.e. the US. To be true, North America has never been any significant market to Nokia - e.g. less than 5 % of Q2 sales originates from there - but I still think the US setback is a pretty bad thing to happen to Nokia. For several reasons. The North American market is important because of the buying power of the US consumers, but also because mobile service innovation and development seem to be gaining momentum in the US. It appears Silicon Valley has picked up on the mobile trend and more and more Web 2.0′ish sites, services and communities are being implemented as - or augmented by - mobile services.
Furthermore, I think the US market today is more important than ever because of Apple's iPhone. And subsequently more difficult to get a foothold in. It looks as if the iPhone is becoming the thing that prompts the average yank to realize that mobile phones can be used for other things besides making calls.
The other major mobile phone manufacturers are also releasing their quarterly reports in these days and it will be exciting to see, how things are developing. Is Sony Ericsson continuing the positive development of the past year? Does Motorola's mobile phone business continue to plummet?
