Why not use your mobile phone as a wireless webcam?

WWIGO can be used with Skype and othe IM apps - gersbo.dk For some time I have been using a free program that enables me to use my mobile phone as a wireless webcam. The program is called WWIGO - Webcam Wherever I GO - and all you need to use it is a compatible handset; a Windows computer; and a very basic knowledge of using bluetooth.

Did I mention it is completely free?

I am pretty psyched about this - it is such a clever application and it is really only the imagination that limits the potential ways in which it can be used. WWIGO can of course be used for video conferencing - e.g. with Skype, MSN Windows Live Messenger and such. But what is keeping you from using the phone as a wireless surveillance camera? Maybe with some additional webcam software? WWIGO works with several older phone models so it is not like you need to have the latest gear to use it. Besides these applications, WWIGO can also be used to record video directly on the computer, using the phone's camera.

Me and my N95 GPS do Greece: Navigation

Using N95 navigation while travelling - gersbo.dkAs noted in a previous post, I took a vacation abroad last week. I went with the extended family to the Greek island of Crete to soak up the sun and have some Greek salads, kalamari and a few gyros. I can only recommend a vacation to Crete as a way to build up stamina for the cold and dark winter months we Scandinavians now face.

But that is a different story - this one is about using the Nokia N95 for satellite navigation (GPS). I of course brought my N95 to Crete and doing so prompted me to write this post, because it seems that having the N95 has changed the way I travel. These are a few of my observations.

Read this if you have trouble downloading map data using MapLoader

Before going abroad for a vacation last week I decided to download map data for the vacation destination to my N95. I thought it would be pretty neat to be able to use the GPS while vacationing (it was! More on this later…) without paying roaming GPRS/3G tarifs to download map data

I quickly ran into some problems when attempting to download map data using Nokia's MapLoader application, however. The cause of the problems are my upgrades to the »Maps« application on the phone and the MapLoader application - I have upgraded both independently of one another, and several times.

Un-branded 1200 mAh BL-5F Nokia N95 battery

Un-branded 1200 mAh BL-5F Nokia N95 battery - gersbo.dkA while back "Jon" - a reader of this blog - posted several comments on my N95-battery-tips post about getting a 1200 mAh battery for his N95. The orginal battery supplied with the N95 is 950 mAh - a little bit on the low side considering the poweful capabilities of the N95 (hence the N95-battery-tips post).

The battery is un-branded and available through ebay retailer "battery-trading".

I decided to order one of these batteries too and it arrived while I was away on vacation last week. All together it cost me £10 to have the battery shipped to Denmark.

I will charge the battery during tomorrow and report back on its performance…stay tuned!

More battery images after the jump.

BlogPlanet limitations

Using BlogPlanetWhen writing my previous post about the BlogPlanet mobile blog editor, I encountered some weird limitations.

For some reasons - maybe the SX1 origins of the app? - there are restrictions on the length of both post text (1000 characters) and titles (128 characters).

But composing blog posts with T9 is actually quite nice…

Here is a link to an overview of how to set up BlogPlanet with different blogging platforms.

Tip: Use BlogPlanet's dictionary for text templates, e.g. a templates for links, inserting images etc.

Using BlogPlanet for N95 moblogging

BlogPlanet blog editor for Symbian S60 - gersbo.dkFor a while I have been interested in finding some sort of setup that will enable me to blog from my mobile phone. Surprisingly, there does not seem to be that many options for S60.

But I think I have found something that works - it is a blog editor called 'BlogPlanet'. BlogPlanet is a J2ME app that appears to be originally made for the Siemens SX1 phone. It features very basic text editing like bold, italic and line breaks.

BlogPlanetSadly, BlogPlanet seems to disable copy-pasting text.

BlogPlanet is also capable of capturing images using the phone's camera - images which can then be inserted into posts. Note however, that there is no access to the phone's own picture gallery - BlogPlanet rolls its own…

BlogPlanet supports Blogger and MetaWeblogAPI, which means it can be used with WordPress (including image uploads).

This post is written and published using BlogPlanet and I think the biggest problem is the tedious text input. I expect to get hold of a bluetooth keyboard soon (Nokia SU-8W or iGo/Stowaway).
