HP Color LaserJet 1600 works with Asus WL-500gP

HP Color LaserJet 1600 - gersbo.dk

When I got a Asus WL-500g Premium router a little over a year ago, one of the reasons for getting that particular model was all the nifty things the WL-500gP can do with its two USB ports. I have been experimenting a bit with hooking up peripherals with the USB ports - I have managed to get a webcam that works with the router and I have also tried out the UPnP server using a Nokia N80, getting somewhat mixed results.

One thing thing I have not gotten around to until now, is connecting a printer and using the WL-500gP as a wireless print server. But because I came across a reasonably priced HP Color LaserJet 1600 printer just before Christmas, and since my HP LaserJet 5L has been out of order for about as long as I can remember, I decided to give it a go. I actually forgot to check if the HP 1600 is compatible with the WL-500gP, but I am very happy to report that the setup works like a charm.

Actually, there is not that much to report since everything worked just like it was supposed to.

I followed the instructions for connecting the printer to the WL-500gP and as can be seen in the image below, the HP 1600 popped right up in the router's web administration interface, just like the router manual said it should.

I then continued to install the printer on the different computers in our house - again I just followed the instructions in the manual, adding a custom TCP/IP port for the printer and using printer drivers I found on HP's web site.

I am very satisfied with this setup. I can print from pretty much every room in the house and the HP 1600 performs very nicely - I have tried printing documents, images and such and the printer's speed and quality is entirely adequate for my needs.
