Dude, what ever happened to my blog?

Traffic on this blog - gersbo.dk - has plummeted quite abruptly and I cannot help but wonder, if I somehow lost (some of) my street cred with Google?

It is either that, or Internet users world wide seem to have unanimously decided my musings are no longer worthwhile…

It is not like this site has ever been a real magnet of attention, but over the past six months or so, I have been very happy to see both traffic and comment activity grow at steady rates. As indicated by the above graph gersbo.dk received between 300 and 450 daily hits until about a week ago, where traffic suddenly dropped below 100 hits daily.

Numbers have stayed there since and it is really weird because I have no clue why this is so - I have not modified any part of my blog setup, just posted a few entries. From the visitor statistics collected by statcounter.com I can see that especially visitors from the US no longer stops by and if I check link: www.gersbo.dk at Google, the result omits several .com sites I know link here. As I said, weird…

So, if you happen to be in the very select group of people that actually read this - and if you have any idea what might be going on - could I trouble you to enlighten me by commenting or dropping me a line at gersbo [at] gmail [dot] com?

Cheers chris

Geo tags and MMS is a no-no

A crappy, but geo tagged image of my bicycle - gersbo.dk

Maybe this information is not new to you, but I was quite surprised to learn it is impossible to send a geo tagged image using MMS.

What prompted me to  look into geo tags and MMS was an inquiry from a client this week. The client uses our messaging gateway and they have been looking into developing a service featuring upload of geo tagged images by MMS. User of the service would send in images and these would all be shown on a map - something that would be used in conjunction with a lot of other stuff going on.

The client had been doing some initial tests and when uploaded images turned up without geo tags, the client contacted us inquiring how our gateway processed the images?

Notes-taking in the Digital Age

Tiddlywiki screendump - gersbo.dk

A few years ago I decided to find some way to digitize my personal notes. At that time I realized the notes I was jotting down were mainly a) related to digital resources (mostly stuff online); and b) intended to be used on some sort of computer, or made for the purpose of forging new digital resources. And so it seemed kind of stupid to take down notes off the screen - only to type them back into a computer later on. Not to mention the issue of revising notes.

I ended up using something called a TiddlyWiki as my digital notepad and have been doing so ever since. I have written about TiddlyWiki before but since I recently updated my TiddlyWiki setup and learned some new stuff, I have decided to write about it some more.

5 reasons why Share on Ovi is a kick-ass service

Do you know "Share on Ovi"? If not, you probably ought to check it out because IMHO, "Share on Ovi" is one of the best ways to store and share pictures, videos and other media - online and for free.

"Share…" was originally called "Twango" (still is, if you look closer at the site URL), but was purchased by Nokia last summer and "re-launched" in February this year as part of "Ovi" - Nokia's online service portal for music, maps, media, games and more. I have been using "Share…" since the "re-launch" in February and I really think it is a great service. The team behind "Share…" seem to have spotted and copied things other services have done right, plus added a few tricks of their own.

I am not going to do a thorough review of every feature on "Share…", but here is a few reasons why you might consider using it.

Note: I started writing this post a few days ago and noticed yesterday, that flickr.com now supports video. Video uploads are only available to flickr »Pro« (i.e. paying) members and each video is limited to 90 sec/150 mb.

Sayonara, Tele 2

For well over a year, I have been dissatisfied with my ISP - Tele 2 . but I have been to much of a lazy sod to do something about it.

I changed that tonight when I came across an advertisement at telmore.dk (my mobile telephony provider). The advertisement informed me that Telmore just started an ISP business offering me:

  1. Cancellation of my current ISP subscription.
  2. A 10 Mbps/1 Mbps line for DKK 299,- a month (Tele 2 charge me DKK 340,- a month for my current 2 Mbps/512 kbps line).

I other words telling me: "Pay us less, do not lift a finger, and we will quintuple the speed of your ADSL line".

How can you say no to an offer like that?

UDP streamlines Nokia 6120 Classic v4.21 firmware upgrade

New firmware v4.21 has been released for the Nokia 6120 Classic - gersbo.dk

UDP, which stands for User Data Preservation is a new mechanism that seriously helps streamline the process of upgrading phone firmware.

Upgrading firmware without UDP is no small feat because the phone's internal memory is wiped as part of the upgrade. To avoid losing user-added data like contacts, calendar-entries, themes, settings, applications and such it is therefore necessary to either back up the data before upgrading, or re-establish it manually after upgrading. Both approaches have drawbacks - manual re-entry is really cumbersome, while restoring a back up does not always work (in my experience).

Life sans taste and smell is kinda dull…

So, it has been a while since I last blogged - partly because we are very busy at work, but mainly because I have been suffering from a vile cold for the past week or so.

Actually, I do not recall ever having a cold quite like this one before. It is not that I have been feeling very ill - no fever and so - but my nose has been stuffed and running like you will not believe it. The worst thing about the cold it that it has completely taken away any sense of taste and smell…completely! For past few days I have been able to feel the texture of the food I eat, but zero taste. For the fun of it, I hosed my dinner tonight with Tabasco and while I could feel the Tabasco sting the inside of my mouth, I could taste none of that either…

In case you were wondering: Life without taste and smell is really lame. Not least because my three chief vices - food, coffee and tobacco have all become utterly meaningless.

I am slowly becoming paranoid that maybe the loss is permanent (knock-on-wood)?
