Does your Nokia 6220 Classic suffer from faulty assembly?

One of the larger, Danish mobile news sites - mobilsiden.dk - reports today how Nokia has had to withhold delivery of 6220C units all across Europe because of assembly problems. According to mobilsiden.dk, the 6220C keypad comes off after being used for just a short while. Nokia intends to fix units that have not yet shipped, causing planned deliveries to be 2 weeks delayed.

Nokia has had problems with assembly before - initial N95 units suffered from "a wobbly sliding mechanism" and I had my N95's sliding mechanism replaced at Nokia's expense.

Only, I have yet to experience any problems with my 6220C unit. I have had it for more than three weeks now, sending quite a few text messages every day and there is absolutely no indication anything should be wrong with the keypad. No loose keys or anything of that sort. I think I even dropped it on a hard surface at one point.

What is your experience? If you happen to own a 6220C, please leave a comment about how your keypad is holding up…

Well, for my 6220, the shutter toggle will only work properly if i push it harder down and slide it down with my left thumb.

Doing a casual push with the other thumb will cause the shutter to not fully open, and the camera app to start and close itself momentarily.

I’ve got another forumite who confirms that his has this fault as well. Does yours work perfect? If so, it’s time to make a trip to the service centre again.

  2. Chris Says:

Hi Kennyboy, and thanks for commenting.
I cannot say my 6220C has any problems with its lens cover mechanism. It is of course possible to not open the lens cover all the way, but other than that the lens cover slides firmly into place. Both when opening and closing it.

  3. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Oh well, guess that trip to the service centre will be needed.

For my 6220c, without pressing down really firmly on the lens toggle and pushing down hard, it will just slide down, and meet the problem stated above. Of course I’m not doing ridiculous stuff like pushing the toggle half way.

Keypad wise it’s still ok. Just a little stiff, and the bottom row of buttons feel strange in style.

  4. Chris Says:

Yes, I think you ought to have it checked out - based upon my sample-of-1 experience, it sounds as if your 6220C has a fault where mine does not.

I agree the keys are a little stiff, but they seem to “loosen up” as you use them. The bottom row is a bit strange - I have to remind myself not to try to press their bottom edge.

Topical thread. Took delivery couple of days ago. First Nokia phone I’ve owned. Firstly camera quality as good as you previously extolled. With regards build quality however I noticed yesterday the silver trim which wraps around the phone feels really flimsy and there is a fair degree of travel if you squeeze it either side of the keypad. I’m going to pop down to the local phone stores this morning to check their display models to see if this is normal. Also the soft keys - don’t know if that’s what Nokia call them but the keys immediately below the screen - will only respond if pressed towards the bottom. Pressing the top of the buttons allows the button to be depressed but without activating anything. This surely can’t be by design?
Love the phone but reckon this one will have to go back - I’ll update later.

  6. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    Update on quality issue.

Soft left key definitely sub-standard on my phone compared to the three stores I’ve checked with a display model on show. Phone will need to go back for replacement.
Issue regarding flimsy silver wrap is common to all three phones inspected so not a quality issue as such. However from a design point of view I would say the choice of this finish is exceedingly poor as it makes the phone feel like a very poor quality handset. Given I’m going to enclose mine in a crystal case for protection this issue will disappear for me but if I didn’t want to protect my phone with a case I would seriously question how long/well this part would last.
Final point I’d make is Mail For Exchange is causing a few issues and I’ve already been escalated above N-Series Advanced Technical Help for further assistance which I’m now awaiting. I’m finding that Nokia’s decision not to define this as a N series phone means that front line support is really limited and invariably you are passed along to N-Series support who have not, as yet, got to grip with the phone.

So in conclusion am I happy with my first Nokia? Most certainly.
Once these minor issues get sorted I believe I will have in my possession the best convergence handset on the market bar none.

p.s. Making use of geotagging on photos already. This has been massively enhanced by discovering GeoSetter - freeware but of such high quality I actually sent the author a donation!!. Fantastic.

  7. Chris Says:

    Hi Patrick,

Thank you very much for your reports - very informative. I have never had any dealings with Nokia Support and I am very interested to learn that your 6220C inquiries are forwarded to N-series support.

After reading your previous comment, I checked the soft keys on my 6220C and they work the way they should.

Please keep them coming! Not least if you actually return your 6220C, whether for service or replacement.

  8. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    Phone going back.

I’ve already got my RMA so I’ll have to switch back to my old HTC Tornado WM until Nokia can send me a replacement.

Purchased from Nokia store online so I’ve acted immediately to ensure I’m within their 7 day refund policy - just in case.

In the meantime anybody know whether Nokia phones can be enhanced with an off the shelf single tap predictive dialler? WM phones allow you to enter straight onto the keypad the name of a contact via single tap predictive entry displaying matched entries which refine as additional keys are pressed.

The 6220 only returns numeric input directly from its keypad meaning names have to searched within contacts via traditional scrolling predictive entry - a few more keystrokes than I’m used to and quite a bit slower.

Apart from that I’m not really missing any other WM features to date so I’m already beginning to feel at home with Symbian.

  9. Gravatar Aks Says:

Yup. My phone definitely has problem:
    1. Opening the lens cover does not trigger the camera application
    2. The power button is extremely stiff. I need to use my thumb nail to on it.

Otherwise it’s a great phone. It’s a pity that I have to return it to the shop.

    Anyone else having similar problem?

  10. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Patrick, be thankful that you’re in a country with appropriate consumer protection laws. Over here in Singapore, I’m having a hard time convincing Nokia Care that the lens cover is faulty. All the China sourced customer officers know nuts about the phone, and is just giving me the nonchalant replies of “There’s nothing we can do, the phone is made like that.”

Luckily, I was able to disprove their claims with 3 display sets that worked perfectly. Now I’ll have to wait for their supervisor to escalate the complaint for a replacement set. Yes, no refund, no instant replacement, no return allowed in Singapore….consumer rights is really the pits over here.

Any more of their crap replies and you would have seen me do a “Hulk Smash” on them. :(

  11. Gravatar Aks Says:

    Hi Kennyboy,

Same here. I stay in Singapore and just know that nokia does not have 7 days 1-1 exchange anymore. It sucks big time.

Went to a Nokia Care Centre and have them open up and check within the same days. Guess what, “We confirm your problem but we can’t repair it” with a big BER chop (Beyond Economical Repair). That’s it! No offer to keep the HP to repair, no offer to exchange to other HP. They mentioned to have escalated the matter to the real nokia (yup I got a feeling that Nokia Care center is a bunch of subcontracted companies, especially after one of the staff mentioned they don’t have nokia phone benefit).

So update us when you got any answer from them, huh? I’ll keep you updated as well.

  12. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

    Hi Aks,

That sounds bad. I have managed to “persuade” NCC to replace it with a brand new set, but I keep my reservations until I see the new set itself. If it has the same problem, I’m going to request replacement with an N82 instead, of course with top up on my end. There’s no way in hell that I’m going to take a new 6220c with the same lousy lens cover.

Trust me, I had to blow my top to get them to agree. Spoke to 3 customer service officers, and they were all united in trying to persuade me that the lens cover was simply “built like that”. Even after I shoved the display set from the nearby Nokia Shop in their face and showed them the proper lens mechanism, they were still trying to make me feel like a fool. Finally, they escalated to the supervisor, who was about to launch into the same song and tale, when I told him that I was not his typical village idiot who knows nuts about phones, and gave him a lecture on the phones I’ve used, and a “loud” demonstration on the failings of the lens cover. In the end, he just gave in and arranged a replacement.

Called the supervisor today, and requested for the replacement asap. I feel it’s my right to expedite a replacement, as the camera app cannot be activated with the current lens cover mechanism in my phone. Said supervisor told me that I would have to wait as ALL the current batch of 6220c has this problem, to which I replied “So you are telling me that Nokia is deliberately selling faulty phones to the public?”

Another time delaying tactic. So after much scolding and lecturing, , he has arranged for a new replacement set, to be received this Wednesday. Hope that it is working as well as Chris’s set. I will seriously consider this being my LAST nokia phone.

Yes, NCC is mainly outsourced personnel. Nothing against outsourced personnel, but knowing totally zero about the product, and generally treating the customers like idiots is just plain wrong. If this Wednesday’s exchange does not go smoothly, you can be sure that I will use all available avenues to kick up a fuss for NCC.

  13. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Also, do note that I did give NCC the time to repair the lens mechanism as they stated the parts were “just in” and they could fixed the problem.

In the end, they returned me with a lens cover that was harder to push, but had the same problem of not activating the camera. They apologized and took it back in for repair.

And guess what I got in the end? The lens cover in the same condition that it was before I sent it to NCC. Loose and still failing to activate the camera. What’s more, the NCC crew had the lack of brains to use their fingers and fingernails to PUSH the lens cover up, and told me that that would make it work.

To anyone who thinks I’m overreacting, how would you feel if someone put a palm print on your 3000-4000 shiny new DSLR? Different prices, but same incredulous feelings, I’m sure.

Honestly, the local NCC only fears bad press. That’s what I intend to do if this Wednesday goes south. Wish me luck…I’m gonna need a load of it.

  14. Gravatar Aks Says:

    Hi Kennyboy,

Which NCC did you went to? Maybe I should try to poke them as well. My progress are:
Fri 20080711 = Purchased the phone
Sun 20080713 = Brought to NCC at Wheelock Place, tried to repair but cannot. On top of that they gave me additional problem, top cover gap
Tue 20080715 = Brought to NCC at Suntec
Wed 20080716 = Phone collected still having the same problem. On top of that they gave me additional problem, lens smudge with fingerprint

From what I gather, going to NCC may not solve the problem so it is recommended that you keep all your evidence (a copy of work order, receipt, everything) and go to court (small claim tribunal) and request a full refund at retail price (currently is ~S$650) even though you are getting it by contract price.

For detail, please go to this forum. They even posted 1-2-3 about going to the court, which is what I’m going to do. Problem is you have to prove to the referee that you have exhausted all means to get the phone fixed by nokia. That means you have to send it for repair several times, write complain letter to Nokia Sg Pte Ltd with your intended action(court of course), and give them 2 weeks to response.

    http://lousyexperience.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=f6f746f250a5fadb1fbb372e4930873f

For the rest of the people, I’m sorry for venting up the problem here but it can at least give you idea on the “consumer right” in Singapore, if there is any.

  15. Chris Says:

No worries, Ask - please feel free to vent your frustration.

I am very sorry to read about the grief your mobile phone is causing you - especially how taking it to repair shops actually made things worse. How very annoying!

It is interesting to learn about consumer rights where you live - here in Denmark consumer rights regulation is pretty strict. Within the first six months after purchase the burden of evidence lies with the manufacturer/reseller so unless it can actually be proved that malfunctions are a direct result of the buyer’s actions, malfunctions are by default assumed to be caused by manufacturing errors.

After the first six months, the burden of evidence shifts to the buyer, which now has to prove that malfunctions result from manufacturing errors.

Therefore, within the first six months, faulty products are either repaired, exchanged or refunded at no cost to the buyer.

  16. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Mine was replaced. Brought to Suntec NCC on Sunday, stayed there around 3-4 hours. After a long story which I prefer not to go through here, got my replacement on Wednesday.

I know about the court action, but that was not my aim. I just wanted a working set.

Would prefer to talk through msn if u’ve got more to discuss. kenny(underscore)boy(underscore)sg at yahoo . (com)

  17. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

    Hi Chris,

Over here there aren’t any strict regulations regarding consumer rights. The govt here is pro-company, so the consumer is pretty much screwed over in terms of faulty stuff. And Nokia is quite well known over here for leaving the consumer stranded. That’s pretty much why we scrutinized over the goods that we intend to purchase before handling the cash over.

Anyway, six months does sound a bit long. Would you continue using a faulty handset for 6 months?

The main problem I encountered was the CSOs constant feigning that the set was not faulty even when I showed them the proper working mechanism of the display set. Made me feel like doing a headbutt on them.

Also, if you managed to force a replacement out from them, you’re made to sign this letter before collection, which basically states that you’re getting a replacement out of the goodwill of their heart, which they didn’t need to in the first place. Also, you’re to keep all knowledge of the settlement private, which means you can’t let people know of the hellhole that the service centre is. I did sign it to get my replacement, but I won’t bother keeping to the terms….they won’t be able to do anything to me anyway.

  18. Gravatar Aks Says:

    Hi all,

Thanks for the support. On this matter I’ll try to keep my head cool, but sometimes you just need to be “explosive” to get things done. :D

    Hi Kenny,

Finally you are getting what you’re paying for. Congratulation. So are you getting back another 6220c or n82 this time round? Any problem your replacement phone? I’m still worried about the overall long term design quality of 6220c after seeing it first hand. That’s why I’m considering to actually get refund and forget about this model.

    Cheers.

  19. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Got back a working 6220c. I’m not an reasonable person. I just want the stuff I bought to work as stated.

Long term wise i’m sure it’ll be ok if i don’t drop it….of course, if quality is impt to you, I would recommend another model like N82.

  20. Gravatar Justin Says:

I’ve just taken delivery of a 6220 directly from nokia and it has the exactly the same button issue. The right hand side of the buttons is coming right away! Sending it back for a refund. Also, the shutter opener seems a bit dodgy too, although it does kick the camera into life! Avoid this phone in my opinion….feels really cheap! It’s made in Hungary…not sure if that is a new location for Nokia?

  21. Gravatar Aks Says:

On my case there is still no call from Nokia, which means they don’t have long term solution yet. My recommendation is to stay away from this model at all cost. Those who are able to refund, better exercise your right before it expires.

  22. Gravatar Aks Says:

Sorry, forgotten to give some photos too:

  23. Gravatar Patrick Says:

Interesting update for everybody arising from my attempt to find out when I would receive the replacement.

Returned phone received by Nokia on 18th July.

I called this morning - about 9.45 am - and was informed the phone was currently out of stock but they would enquire on my behalf as to when it was expected back in stock. I took this to be a good sign as it meant they had either pulled all stock (unlikely) or at the very least I wouldn’t get a replacement from the stock pool of the suspect first batch.

At this point I thought I’d head over here to see whether any further comments re quality issues had been posted and read with some dismay Justin had received a faulty model as recently as last week.

At this point I thought I’d protect my legal position by asking for a refund which would allow me to monitor this issue safe in the knowledge I hadn’t waived any rights by accepting a replacement rather than a straightforward refund. When I was confident the quality issue had been addressed I could purchase anew.

Called back at 10.30am to request the refund as they didn’t have stock to hand. The representative asked me to hold while he checked with his supervisor then came back on the line telling me stock had just been received this morning and it could in fact be the case they had already shipped the replacement but if it was found to be faulty it would also be covered by their 7 day exchange policy.

Now this is where it gets interesting.

While still on this call (landline) my mobile rang and not recognising the caller rushed the Nokia representative off the line stating that was fine and hopefully the replacement would be OK. The incoming mobile caller was…….

Nokia, more precisely the lady who I had first spoken to at 9.45am coming back to inform me she had escalated my request about replacement stock and could inform me they would be back in stock NEXT WEEK.

At this point I informed her of the conversation I had just had with her colleague and said I was more inclined to believe her with regards stock dates and suspected her colleague and his supervisor had been attempting to avoid authorising a refund by fabricating stock dates (or maybe shipping out a unit from the faulty first batch regardless).

Given the fact I don’t expect Nokia to behave like a used car salesman making facts up as they go along I have instructed Nokia to issue a refund and I will decide when I’m good and ready as to when I will replace the phone.

I half expect Nokia will simply ship me the phone (not good as a first time customer that I already hold such a low opinion of the company) which I will refuse to accept when delivery is attempted.

I’ve no concern I’ll get my refund -either immediately or following a possible refused delivery attempt - but it has left a bad taste in my mouth.

In conclusion Nokia have screwed up a killer phone (initially at least for some of us) by encasing it in an extremely poor quality finish - I do not believe that a better design and perhaps use of slightly more robust plastic parts would have added any significant cost to the item. I am not expecting metal parts but for God’s sake design the phone so it doesn’t squeak and creak - how hard can that be?

I’ll update as the saga unfolds.

  24. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Well well well…looks like it’s the same all round.

Which country are you residing in?

  25. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    I’m in the UK.

I guess having had access to the 6220 for a few days has at least done me a couple of favours.

One it’s stopped me buying the N82. I can’t stand the keypad - just feels wrong - but might have been tempted if the Voice Activation software was top class.

Trying VA out on the 6220 has convinced me it is more like bottom class so assuming the N82 uses the same software the N82 is now definitely off my list.

Secondly it’s reminded me that first mover status often times is fraught with grief. While this phone ticks every box (apart from crap build and poor VA) I’ll happily wait while hopefully Nokia sort out the build quality issue and if that takes a couple of months I’m betting I’ll get a nice discount on the £279 just paid.

p.s. Just noticed on Nokia’s UK site they are stating phone out of stock due to unprecedented demand back in stock NEXT WEEK. Well what a surprise.

  26. Gravatar Aks Says:

I’m sorry to hear that, Patrick. I was assuming the problem was localized in Singapore. Now that UK is affected we can safely assume that Nokia is trying very hard to stop people from knowing serious quality issue of 6220classic. My suggestion remain the same. Get the refund, watch from safe distance about the problem, and buy the phone 3-6 months down the road when they manage to solve the problem, if they do manage to get it solved and if you still love Nokia.

I’ve checked around Singapore for any shop still selling the phone. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) the phones are not available at many places. It can only mean (a) Nokia still unable to fix the problem, hence they are stopping production (b) Nokia is trying to fix the problem of existing owner before they started selling again. Between a and b, I’d say (a) is more likely.

On my case I’ve already sent letter for anyone from Customer Service department to settle the problem by 5th Aug. But knowing them, I won’t be surprised if I’ll be ignored again. Then it’ll be small claim turn.

  27. Gravatar Patrick Says:

The problem is likely to be Europe wide as I know my Nokia was shipped from Holland which I assume services other European countries as well.

Seems such a shame this highly spec’d phone delivered at such a reasonable price has been let down by something so trivial as poor assembly.

  28. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    Shock horror.

Received an email from Nokia this morning informing me my replacement order had just been placed - not yet shipped.

    Yet another phone call
Yet another “it’s being shipped today”
Yet another “no thanks I want my refund”
Yet another “I’ll escalate your request for the refund”

Nokia website still showing out of stock - back next week.

    To be continued…..

  29. Gravatar Aks Says:

I’ve just got phone call from Nokia Rep offering to replace the model to N78 same price. In the end I picked N82 with additional sum of money. I just don’t want 6220classic anymore.

So apparently Nokia can be quite reasonable IF the complaint is directed to correct department to handle. For my case I prefer not to waste any breath with Nokia Customer Care people as they are all subcontracted company without any real authorisation to make action.

To send the letter, you must first identify the correct Nokia Company and send it attned to Customer Service Department, which is written below for my case.

    Nokia Pte Ltd
    Customer Service Department
    438B Alexandra Road
    #07-00 Alexandra Technopark
    Singapore 119968

    Write down the following:
    - The time you bought the phone
    - The problem found at the phone
    - The repair attempts you’ve tried (mine is 3 times), be reasonable to try repair it at least 2 times. It will strengthen your case if you need to go to court.
    - The reason for exchange/ refund (I’d prefer refund as it is the worst, from there you can bargain)
    - The action you are going to bring against them
    - The deadline to respons (10 working days is reasonable)

Send the the letter by registered mail. This way no one able to say they are not receiving it, keep the receipt also for purpose of court.

I’ll keep you updated after receiving the phone (and sign the NDA letter I assume)

  30. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Great…so how much did you have to top up?

  31. Gravatar Aks Says:

I have to pay additional S$50-100, but the exact amount will only be mentioned during the swap which is tonight.

  32. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    Quick update.

Surprise, surprise still no refund. After a lengthy phone call to Nokia this morning was promised I would receive my refund and the reason for the delay was the fact there system was still listing the phone for replacement which had now been amended.

Hopefully I should see the money hit my account in the next few days.

In the meantime the price has dropped almost 10% - £279 down to £255 so the wait will have paid off.

Lastly the UK is still listing out of stock - apparently due to unprecedented demand? I hope it’s because they are actually re-engineering the poor finish hence the lengthy period out of stock.

I’ll update once I’m back in funds and have re-purchased at the lower price.

  33. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    Progress X 2

    Refund confirmation now received!!

    Phone now back in stock.

Before putting in my new order - at the lower price :) would anyone who might have paid a visit here but never swopped out their phone like to confirm, notwithstanding the known flimsy nature of the build, the 6220 Classic is still proving to be a solid performer.

I’m guessing the build quality will remain unaltered, in spite of hoping they might engineer some changes, and this has probably been the driver behind the price drop - why else would you reduce so quickly the price on a model which was apparently so successful it sold out its first bath “due to unprecedented demand”.

  34. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Well, I’m still pretty pleased with the phone…just mind that you get another one with the faulty lens shutter.

Everything else just works fine and dandy…:D

And don’t always believe the “demand” stuff…it could just as well be damage control.

  35. Chris Says:

I have had my 6220C for a couple of months - I have not had any problems with it and have not swopped it. As you can see from the entries on this blog, I am putting the phone through the paces and I am very pleased with it.

The price drop need not be related to any problems with build quality - Nokia just slashed prices on several handsets - maybe the 6220C is one of them?

  36. Gravatar Patrick Says:

Thanks Chris and Kennyboy for the heads up.

Phone on order from Nokia UK - should be with me in couple of days.

Fingers crossed the shutter is one of those without the reported problem - my previous phone had no issue in this respect just the keypad.

Can’t wait to get hold of it once more and start putting it to the type of use that Chris has been superbly reporting.

I’ll let you all know first impressions of build quality when it arrives.

  37. Gravatar fiona Says:

well ive had the phone for a week as an uprgade, im loovinggg it! its got everything that i wanted, but the only problem, is that the back case loose on the right hand side when looking at it, its been like that ever since i opened the back to put my sim and battery in it, does anyone else have this problem? can it be solved by ordering a new back cover?

  38. Chris Says:

@Patrick: Hope you have more luck with this one!

@Fiona: This is maybe a stupid question, but are you sure you put the cover back on properly? In my experience back covers sometimes go “amiss” in the sense that one side of the cover will slide - or click - on properly, but the other side will not. If possible, send me a photo - gersbo at gmail.com - of your phone. I will take a look and compare it to my own 6220C.

  39. Gravatar Patrick Says:

    The postman knocked twice!

    First impression of build quality.

    Much better.

Keypad and external casing show little sign of the movement /travel previously experienced. In fact the tolerance of this unit is good enough for me to almost forgive Nokia using the rather flimsy plastic silver wraparound finish.

Shutter is anything is better than before with a nice click as it locks fully into position.

Charging as I write. Looks like my weekend has just been planned for me - next stop Mail for Exchange and CorePlayer installs.

Bye Bye Windows Mobile - Hello Nokia.

  40. Chris Says:

    That is great news, Patrick.

  41. Gravatar huy Says:

The back cover of mine doesn’t go on properly, the side of where the camera button is doesn’t fit on and hangs out. :(

Glad to report I’ve found SkyeQuiKey. Fills in the one feature I was missing following my switch to Symbian from Windows. Makes dialling contacts now every bit as fast and easy as before - this phone really ticks all the boxes now.

    One very happy Nokia owner

  43. Chris Says:

@Patrick: Glad to hear you are getting your phone to behave the way you want it to - it is one of the nice things about S60.

If other readers would like to know more about SkyeQuiKey - which I have not tried myself, yet - please go to the blog “Symbian in Motion” where several posts about SkyeQuiKey can be found. Including a thorough walk through of the application’s features.

I think I am going to give SkyeQuiKey a shot in the near future…

  44. Gravatar Nadeem Says:

    Hi all,

For those having problems with the back cover of the 6220 classic its because there is a little clip which has been bent (usually on the camera button side). If you look on the cover (underneath, towards the end where the charger goes), you will notice there are 2 little plastic bits sticking out, one of them might be bent so you need to straighten it out and slide back the cover cafefully.

    Hope that helps

Apologiesfor d/p - messed up link - No worries, I have deleted your other comment, chris
I must be cursed. I’m now on my 3rd handset - arrived 11th Sept. Checked the obvious, keypad fine, lens cover fully retracts - quickly entomb it in a silicon case and start using. All’s well for 12 days until all of a sudden the battery seems to go from full charge to no charge in the blink of an eye. Try charging from wall plug - takes 3 attempts to try and get battery icon moving only for phone to shut down as its out of juice.
Protective refund claim lodged (only 3 days left before I’d be denied this) but prior to sending back wanted to know has anybody else had battery issues with Nokia/this phone. I’ve discovered a neat battery analyser Nokia call the Energy Profiler which I’m using to try and track down what’s going on. If I discover anything I’ll post it here.

    Hi Patrick,
Very sorry to hear about your continuing trouble. I have not experienced anything like what you describe - except that a new battery needs a few charges for its performance to become consistent. I guess your are past that if you have had it for 12 days?

  49. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

Did you install any program that runs in the background, or uses 3g connection extensively?

  50. Gravatar Patrick Says:

Obvious candidate is Mail for Exchange which I left on overnight (in Always On state) for testing purposes plus 2 programmes left open, SkyeQuiKey and Expense Calendar neither of which should be active or causing a drain.

From a fully charged battery at 10pm to a low battery pop up at 7.30 am next morning does not strike me as normal given absolutely no activity other than MfE fluttering its little heart away.

Would expect at least 3 days from my old HTC WM5 smartphone under identical conditions.

Damn this phone is like a nubile young thing that has turned my head after years of domestic routine with the wife only for it to drive me mad by constantly not turning up for the promised moments of snatched passion - if you see what I mean.

The question is should I return to domestic routine or try and understand my new passion better.

    Further battery tests underway ;)

  51. Gravatar kennyboy Says:

That would most probably the cause.

Personally i use System Seven for my email needs. Don’t really like MfE.

  52. Gravatar Patrick Says:

I’m Exchange Server centric so need to stick with MfE.

The Always On state is what’s killing the battery though.

Consuming extra power by a factor of TEN! - 0.334Ah compared to 0.032Ah over six hour test period.

Going to set MfE to 15 min schedule overnight and see whether that yields enough extra battery consumption to make this a usable device i.e. at least an 18 hour day of reasonable “smartphone” type use.

I knew the 900mAh battery was a bit undersized when I bought the phone (3 yr old similar sized HTC Tornado has 1150mAh) but very surprised at how poorly battery holds up in day to day use.

If the upcoming N79 had more than an inadequate 50Mb of RAM I’d already have returned the 6220 while awaiting its release in Oct/Nov. N79 seems to solve the build quality issue associated with 6220, has a 1200mAh battery and is being quoted at a roughly similar price The only other difference - dual LED not Xenon - wouldn’t be an issue for me.

Reckon I’ll hold onto 6220, subject to test tonight, and then break my habit of forgetting all about new phones for a minimum 24 month period by upgrading as soon as Nokia churn out the N79 +1 which addresses the internal memory issue - why would any phone manufacturer think 50Mb is workable nowadays?

how did you bend it back. did you use any tools. think my bakc cover does have a bent clip.

ive had one for one and a bit months now and several buttons have ceased to work properly. originally the # key came off and once i got that repaired after a few weeks the caera zoom + button has become permenantly pressed the contacts button no longer works and the upward scrolling button sticks… back to the shop again… also when they fixed it the first time they let a load or sust on the screen which is super annoying… but other than the case flaws i think its a good phone

Thanks alot. Been trying for ages, and I was the clip. You have kept me from going insane!

I’m considering buying a 6220 but one problem I’ve seen a lot by reviewers is that the caller display will only show numbers, not names when people ring. Is this just due to people not setting it up correctly or an inherent Nokia fault?

  57. Gravatar Evie Says:

In response to Nadeem, that solution has worked perfectly and my cover is now back on properly! :) thankyou so much, 5 members of family and various friends have looked at it and couldn’t work it out so whoop lol

In response to marc, turn the back cover so that the inside is facing up at you and put it on a desk, spin it around so that the end where the charger would be is facing further away from you, pick it up and look down the length of the cover. you’ll see the 2 little clips are bend downwards towards the case. Grab a pin (I found this worked best) and raise the clips upwards until they are level, horizontal and of course matching each other! You do have to put the cover back really carefully and if it doesn’t work, persevere! I did mine twice before it fitted perfectly. you should find one goes in better than the other so just match the other up until they’re both the same, it took me less that 20secs to sort the problem out! it’s such an easy solution. Other than that everyone seem to be really really unlucky with their handsets as i’ve had mine for a couple of days and *touch wood* haven’t experienced anything that’s been described by others! hope every finds a solution to their problems :)

Hi I have just received my Nokia 6220 (Unopened/boxed)

The keypad is hanging off. Literally the keypad is detached from the phone, also I am amazed at the low quality of the phone casing itself, yes it’s light, but it’s lightweight because the materials used are of very low quality. This phone will not last more than a month, there is a hard aftermarket case available (This will be a top seller!). I am putting this phone straight back into its box and sending it back. I am shocked at the lack of quality from nokia. I know we’re in a recetion but I think a phone made of paper mashey would be more durable.

  60. Gravatar Chloe Hoeben Says:

My Nokia 6220 also had the casing problem which I sorted out a while ago. My first one had to be replaced after 3 days because it kept turning itself off though. Now the keys on the left won’t work at all - the green phone, the central key and the numbers don’t resond to anything (Unless I take the phone apart - then they work)
Taking it in to Nokia tomorrow - but it’s going to be a long wait until I get it back, and after 9 months, I’m sure they’ll find a way to blame me for the problem.
Anyone else having keypad issues? I’m sure if they had just built a stronger casing it wouldn’t be doing this.

my nokia 6220 keypad is totally disordered and not working and i am extremely disappointed from this set.in the beginning when i purchased this set i liked it very much but now it as been able to be thrown in the garbage.extremely disgusting.

I have friend who also has this phone. I compared my phone to his and there is huge difference. First the camera: When the camera is set on auto mode in scene modes it takes very long to focus when I take pictures. Approximately 5-6 seconds. Whereas on the other phone it takes less than 3 seconds. Also his keypad is softer than mines. I have to press the buttons precisely (usually in the middle) so as to work. I’m disappointed with my phone. :(
