Friday fun at the office with Nokia E71 and BH-500 bluetooth headset
I talked my boss into getting the Nokia E71 - an acquisition that has somehow sent him on quite a shopping spree for accessories. Just today a Nokia BH-500 bluetooth headset arrived and immediately after receiving it, we decided to run a few tests at the office.
We first checked out the sound quality by making some calls to and from the headset. The results were very satisfactory, although one critic thought the microphone picked up too much ambient noise.
Now, besides the fact that the BH-500 can be used with any headphones (with 3.5 mm plug), the really interesting thing about the BH-500 headset is the included AD-47W Bluetooth adapter, which acts as a dedicated audio gateway.
The AD-47W Bluetooth adapter plugs into any (Windows) PC and enables you to stream music from the PC to the headset. There is very little configuration to do - once the adapter is paired with the headset, you simply plug the adapter into your computer and - bob's your uncle - any audio played on the computer is streamed to the headset.
Works like a charm, according to my boss.
Using the adapter, we hooked up the headset with the boss' PC and put some music on.
Next, we also hooked up the headset with the E71 and - while continuing to stream music from the PC - made a call to the E71.
Sure enough, the headset turned down the music (coming not from the phone, but from the PC), answered the call and then turned the music back on when the call was finished.
Brilliant!
A final note on the headphones that come with the BH-500 - their sound quality is adequate, but nothing more. We tried several different and high-end headphones and the difference is clear. So, if you are serious about music you probably want to use one of your own headsets - which is no problem - as noted above, the headphones are completely interchangeable since the microphone is located on the headset itself.
