Nokia 6220 Classic is gone

Last week I sold off my 6220 Classic.

I did not let the 6220C go because I did not like the handset - I actually liked the 6220C's feature set - and the implementation of it - especially because the form factor makes it a handset you just slip in and out of your pocket. I am sure the 6220C - and its companion, the 6210 Navigator - will play a big part in promoting GPS and nice cameras.

Both handsets can now be had quite cheaply here in Denmark - both are about 400 $ SIM free. In the past week or so, the 6220 Classic has climbed from being the 10th best selling handset in Denmark, and had a brief stint at #7, according to the site mobilpriser.dk.

No, I sold off my 6220 Classic for two reasons: one major and one minor issue.

Major issue: No WiFi

Using the 6220 Classic has made me realize just how much I have come to rely on having WiFi in my mobile phone. Especially for uploading images and video to my accounts at flickr and Share on Ovi, using the "Share Online" application.

I quickly found myself in a situation where I would have 10 or 20 photos on the 6220C, but no way to upload them. Uploading directly from the 6220C via 3G was simply too expensive and I would have to transfer the photos to either my N95, N82 or a PC in order to upload them. Way too much trouble!

Minor issue: Poor video quality

The 6220 camera’s weak point is in my view the sub par video quality. It is supposedly 640×480 pixels, 30 fps like the Nseries models, but as someone more knowledgeable in these matters has pointed out, it is actually lower quality - probably 320 x 240 that has been interpolated to 640 x 480 and saved as such.

It shows.

What now?

Bring on the N85!

    Chris,

    Snap.

Sent mine back for final refund as previously posted. My decision wasn’t ultimately about build quality - anybody want to buy a hardly used black silicon case which ensures no bits fall off! I decided both lack of WiFi and an undersized battery would, over time, grow from a minor irritation to a major disappointment.

So my almost perfect phone (then) has now been replaced in my affections with my almost perfect phone (now) namely the upcoming N79. I know some will be put off by loss of the Xenon flash but as a business phone all my work is based outdoors so it’s no issue for me. The only other issues are possibly a smaller than ideal internal memory and lack of a black colour option but I can live with both of these quite happily.

For me the sign of a well thought out purchase of any piece of technology is something that gives you a minimum 2/3 years use. No other phone gets anywhere close in the form factor I’ve now had for over 5 years - Sony T610/HTC Tornado - to the feature set offered by the N79.

I’m hoping once I’ve got the N79 in my hand it will meet this yardstick and I’ll be able to put all thoughts of the next greatest phone to one side for at least this amount of time.

    Well, Patrick,

I for one welcome you amongst us wretched souls that seek to find the perfect phone ;-)

After searching for THE ONE for years myself, I have arrived at the conclusion that this search it is a never ending quest, because you are shooting at a moving target. Through this insight, I have achieved a zen-like peace of mind.

I hope the N79 will be more to your taste - I personally believe RAM is not all it is cranked up to be. My N95-1 has very little RAM and yet I rarely get the “Out of Memory” SOD. In particular, I do not remember encountering it since the v20.0.015 firmware was released featuring demand paging.

Currently I am putting my money on the N85…or rather, I intend to do so once it becomes possible.

    Black N79 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3QWhNX_hls
Too bad it’s only some chinese copy. Five months after N82 was released there was black N82, so maybe there will be black N79 too? :)
    But who can wait? :]
