Why Share on Ovi’s Map View is better than flickr’s
Once again it is hats off to the team behind Nokia’s “Share on Ovi” service, because once again they have seem to have looked at how others have implemented a particular feature, before providing a superior implementation of the same feature.
What I am referring to is the “Map View” that was recently introduced at “Share on Ovi”. The Map View is available for each channel and provides a map, showing all geo-tagged media in the channel as overlays.
The image to the left shows what a Map View looks like – pictures and videos (BTW, I was not aware videos could be geo-tagged – were you?) recorded at the same position are lumped together and shown using a single marker. The granularity of the Map View changes as you zoom in and out.
A similar Map View has been available at flickr for quite some time, but I much prefer the Map View at “Share..”.
Why?
If you look at the image below of a sample Map View on flickr, you will notice the “string” of images at the bottom. Those are the images whose locations are being shown on the map. When implementing the Map View, flickr must have decided not to show all images at once, but instead break the photostream into sections that each consist of about 30 images (this goes for flickr sets too). As you can maybe see on the image below, it is possible to scroll the images left and right. Doing so moves to another section of images and the map changes accordingly.
I have been really annoyed at flickr map’s "image sectioning feature”, since it makes it impossible to establish any sort of geographical overview of your images. Say you have several images all recorded at (around) the same location, but located in different parts of your flickr photostream. AFAIK there is simply no way to display all of these images in the map at the same time.
I find this really weird because I would think the Map View was meant to provide exactly this kind of overview: Open the map view and zoom in on a specific locationn to see any images recorded at that location; or see the recorded location of a specific image and see what other images was recorded close by.
I think I know why flickr chose to implement the "image sectioning feature” – it lessens the load on the browser when it renders the map, and the objects on it.
Anyhoo, I am happy to report the Map View on “Share…” does not appear to have this limitation. Any geo-tagged media in a channel is placed on the map.
To summarize, “Share on Ovi” continues to rock, and I hope you will enjoy the addition of the Map View.
