Nokia Maps: “Maximum number of connections in use”
Ever come across this error?
As shown on the image to the left, the full error message is actually: “Maximum number of connections in use. Please close an active connection first.”.
It is fairly common and is caused by a restriction on the number of network connections a S60 handset will handle simultaneously. The site where I picked up the image shown on the left, suggests to press and hold the red “End Call” key, until the handset asks you if you want to “End packet data connection?”.
However, I recently managed to run into it in circumstances where the actual cause of the error was less obvious.
The thing is, not only do I switch handset a lot – I also switch around SIM cards between the handsets I use.
Apparently, this switching back and forth SIM cards recently got Nokia Maps all confused, and triggered the “Maximum number of connections in use. Please close an active connection first.” error. It took me a while to figure out what was wrong, but here it is:
When Nokia Maps is used, several network connections are used and in principle, different access points can be used for these connections. For things to actually work and because of the OS restriction on simultaneously network connections, the one and same access point must be used.
Nokia Maps uses a connection for Assisted GPS (A-GPS) data communication – the access point to use for this network connection is specified in the general phone settings, under “Main menu” | “Tools” | “Settings” | “Phone sett.” | “General” | “Positioning” | “Positioning server” | “Access point”.
Nokia Maps also uses a network connection for online searches and downloading map data. The access point to use for this connections is specified from with Nokia Maps itself – under “Options” | “Tools” | “Settings” | “Internet” | “Network destination” (FP2) (“Default access point” (FP1)).
It is perfectly ok to assign different access points for these two connection types, but for Nokia Maps to function properly – and to avoid the “Maximum number of connections in use. Please close an active connection first.” error – you have to make sure you actually use the one and same access point.
What botched up things for me, when I switched SIM cards, was that Nokia Maps prompted me to choose a new access point for one of the network connections (because I switched to another operator), but the other one was left at the previously assigned access point.

Hello, I am curious to know which handset and firmware version you are using?
I am currently using the Nokia N95 with the latest v30 firmware and have not encountered this error, even whilst using multiple applications which require a live internet connection.
This issue was first raised to me by my wife whilst using an E71, Nokia Maps had also never even been opened. Further investigation revealed that it is a Firmware issue which has apparently been fixed in the latest firmware release.

Hello, I experienced it on a Nokia 6220 Classic running the original firmware - v3.06, I think (I no longer have the 6220C).
It makes sense for this to be a firmware issue. I just checked on my N95-1 (v30.0.015 firmware) and I cannot replicate the error here.

Thanks! This recently affected my N82. Seemingly randomly, Google Maps and other application that accessed the network would display this message. I would hit ‘Cancel’ or ‘Ok’, and then continue. Nokia Maps on the other hand would generally lock up the phone. I’d have to remove the battery to regain functionality.
Thanks again, this fixed it!
