Firefox 3 freezes if uploading or downloading

Problem: All of sudden, Firefox would completely freeze on me, if I tried to either download or upload a file. I had to kill it using the Windows task manager.

Searching for a way to fix this problem, I noted how there seems to be many different ways to make Firefox freeze, but I did manage to find help fixing the problem.

Ubiquitous TiddlyWiki

For some time, I have been using a TiddlyWiki for my immediate and random notes. The major feature of TiddlyWiki is that it is just one HTML file with embedded javascript functions. I use my TiddlyWiki in much the same way the Google Notebook is used, but instead of having the TiddlyWiki "online", I would carry it around on the USB thumbdrive I always have with me. From time to time, I would FTP my TiddlyWiki to wiki.gersbo.dk to make my notes even more accessible.

That is all in the past now, thanks to BidiX's UploadPlugin (TiddlyWiki functionality is extendable through user developed plugins). The UploadPlugin enables me to edit and save my online TiddlyWiki from the TiddlyWiki itself, on any computer.

To accomplish this neat feature, two parts are used. One part is the plugin, which must be installed (copy-pasted) into the TiddlyWiki, the other part is a small PHP script, which must reside on your web server. If you edit an online copy of a TiddlyWiki, the changes made are temporarily contained within the browser. When you hit the "save to web" link in the TiddlyWiki, the plugin contacts the PHP script (basic username + password authentication is provided), which then overwrites the online copy with the browser copy.

So simple and so neat…

Firefox Bookmarks Synchronizer

I enjoy using the Mozilla FireFox browser and I particularly like FireFox's extension capability. One of the most usable extensions to me is the ability to synchronize my bookmarks via ftp, using the Bookmarks Synchronizer by Torisugari. In a typical day, I use several different machines and it is quite handy to have my bookmarks "follow me around".

One problem is for extension developers to keep up with the rapid development of the Firefox browser itself. On several occasions, I have performed an update to Firefox, only to discover that one or several of my extensions could not be updated too. Through the update mechanism of Firefox, that is. Often it is possible to find an updated version of an extension elsewhere.

This is just what happened for me today: I upgraded Firefox to version 1.5.0.1 and was warned that the Booksmarks Synchonizer extension would not be working after the update. I then went looking and found a 1.5.0.1-compatible version of Bookmarks Synchronizer. Totally sweet!

On the page where I downloaded the updated Bookmarks Synchronizer from, I also found a link to an "unofficial" version of one of Torisugari's other extensions: the Sort Bookmarks extension.

Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts

I came across this nifty overview of keyboard shortcuts for the Mozilla Firefox browser. The page also lists the equivalent shortcuts for Internet Explorer and Opera.

A few different plugins exist for synchronizing bookmarks. I use Bookmarks Synchronizer by Torisugari. The Bookmarks Synchronizer plugin is not yet available through the official Mozilla update site for FireFox v.1.0, but for the impatient (such as myself), comfort may be found at Torisugari's web site.
